Michael Appleton has been announced as the new Portsmouth FC manager, almost four weeks after former boss Steve Cotterill left the Fratton Park hotseat to move north to Nottingham Forest. The 35-year-old, who was previously Roy Hodgson’s assistant at Premier League side West Bromwich Albion, has signed a three and half year contract with the club.
Appleton, who fought off a number of other more experienced candidates, will be looking to impress in his first attempt as manager of a football club. Chief executive David Lampitt explained in the press conference …
I see that this week has been another busy one for Pompey, with Pompey drawing their last game of the season to Scunthorpe 1-1, A catastrophic mistake by Jamie Ashdown meant he would end the best season of his career on a downer. But a goal back by soon to be “former Portsmouth star” David Nugent earned Pompey a deserved point, a very poor performance by the Blues was overshadowed by yet another amazing blue army performance in the crowd. The silence of the Scunthorpe fans was noticed by Pompey so …
Lots of debate regarding this issue, so I thought I’d go through each player and give my thoughts, ahead of it being announed on Monday night.
Jamie Ashdown: ever present in the side and no doubt he is a good, reliable Championship keeper. Difficult perhaps to live with expectations having had David James previously, but done a steady job for the club.
Darryl Flahavan: also ever present..except on the bench. Not given an opportunity to show how good he is. Surely give him the last game of the season?
Greg Halford: good …
As we’re coming to the end of another football season, I thought it would be time to analyse whether it’s been a success of failure for Portsmouth FC.
I think the most important thing for Pompey fans is that the club are still in existence. This time last year, it was a rather depressing state of affairs, with the threat of going into liquidation very real. However, I personally never doubted that the club would pull through, and despite many of the problems which are no doubt still there, the most …
Portsmouth midfielder Kevin Prince-Boateng has been handed a surprise place in Ghana ‘s 23-man World Cup squad, despite not even playing for the national side.
Boateng recently gained FIFA approval to switch his nationality after previously receiving caps at Under-21 level for Germany.
Nevertheless, the 23-year-old is expected to make his first-team debut for Ghana in a warm-up game against the Netherlands, in Rotterdam on Tuesday.
Ghana are in Group D alongside Serbia, Australia and Germany.
Interestingly enough, Kevin Prince could be facing his own brother, Jerome Boateng, when Ghana face Germany on 23 …
Ahead of its three-year sponsorship deal with the Football League, Npower has released an image of the new logo for the Football League, a logo which will appear on the sleeves of Portsmouth shirts.
Npower recently celebrated its 10th anniversary with a fresh rebrand and a £21m deal to become the main sponsor of the Football League. It will replace Coca-Cola, whom had sponsored the league since 2004.
Under the terms of the deal, clubs will launch Npower community projects, while the brand will sponsor the League’s junior football tournament, the Children’s …
“It means to me a lot what’s happened here, because it’s not just football here…
“With Chelsea it was football, we wanted to (win) titles, we (reached the) Champions League Final which I will always remember, but here it’s more than football.
“It’s something I cannot describe in your language. It’s very touching… I don’t even (know) what to say because you see what’s around the club. (They) keep the atmosphere; (they) keep the spirit.
“It’s not easy, not just in football but in normal jobs also. I see the fans; I see …
Portsmouth restore a sense of local pride as they emphatically trounce their neighbours in their own backyard…
I cannot put into words how good a feeling it was on Saturday to hear the referee’s final whistle. As a Portsmouth fan I have an endured a lot this season. Only on Wednesday did the club look as though they were going out of existence, and that threat still remains. Yet winning 4-1 at Southampton was as good a feeling I’ve ever felt being a Portsmouth supporter.
I was slightly nervous about the game. …
Portsmouth are hopeful of reaching an agreement with the High Court today as they look to avoid being wound-up.
In what has been described as the ‘most defining week’ in the club’s history, Portsmouth could potentially go out of existence tomorrow afternoon.
Tonight’s home league fixture against Sunderland could be their last ever game, yet bizarrely, a host of tickets still remain.
Lawyers representing the club have been in talks with HM’s Revenue & Customs over the past couple of days, working over a deal which would see the court charge dropped.
Portsmouth’s latest …
Pompey hope to add to their defensive options today with the signing of Ricardo Rocha.
The centre-half, mostly recognised for his time at Tottenham, has been released by Belgian side Standard Liege, allowing him to sign for Portsmouth on a free transfer.
During his career, Rocha received a positive review from arguably one of the greatest footballers of our generation, Ronaldinho. While playing for Benfica in a 2006 Champions League Quarter-Final against Barcelona, Rocha was faced with the difficult task of marking the Brazilian. Nevertheless, by the end of the game Ronaldinho …
